Pre-course assessments

default-16x9

I have become involved with the administration and delivery of a range of accreditied management and business related programmes. Learners are funded to complete these programmes and we therefore need to demonstrate to all interested parties that the delegates are on the right programme. I want to identify a simple yet effective tool to achieve this without drowning the learners in paper or consuming a lot of additional staff costs. Any thoughts would be very welcome.

Starting point – do you have a set of criteria for ‘qualifying for a course’ ?

  2. Pre course assessments
In my organisation we have used a mixture of pre course criteria and questions. These are completed by not only the delegate but also their line manager – this gives a more rounded approach to assessing whether the candidate really does need the training on offer and if it fits their needs. This is scored using a matrix approach and the questions are categorised, enabling scoring of each category. If training is the answer it is followed up by the same activity and scored – thus giving a progression score. Good for measurement and for ROI! This should be used as a motivational tool for the learner.

  3. Self Assessment
When I worked in-house I designed a simple assessment, on the same lines as Emma. The main emphasis was on the employee demonstrating how the course was going to improve their performance in their current job and improve the likelihood of their development in the company. I had one individual who started filling it in and then realised that she didn’t really need to do the course at all and there were little personal or professional benefits from it.

Thanks for the comments. I need something specific for pre-assessing learners coming onto open courses. Not to worry – I’m sure I’ll work it out eventually!
