Project Management – an essential skill to climb the corporate ladder?

default-16x9

Good project management skills are obviously vital for Project Managers but these skills are becoming increasingly important in management and leadership roles.

In fact, some of the skills that you need to be an effective project manager such as good communication, team building and problem solving abilities, are the same attributes that can be found in great Managers and Leaders. Unsurprisingly, these skills also form an integral part of any good project management course.

Project management is usually associated with big projects in organisations such as change and transformation programmes, but any work related task which requires preparation and management, requires effective project management skills.

Most people’s role at work involves dealing with lots of ‘tasks’. These ‘tasks’ don’t have to be a huge project to benefit from using project management techniques particularly in the planning and implementation stage. Developing expertise by having some project management training can, therefore, have wide ranging benefits in most roles and boost your career prospects.

There are a number of different project management tools available such as PRINCE2®, MSP®, APM, APMP and ITIL, which will help with managing any tasks which require an assessment of potential risks, challenges and failures, the effective analysis of available options and the implementation of actions in order to deliver a successful outcome.

In business, project management can be used for any task or project which involves launching, developing or changing things in any business area or function. Here are some of the areas where project management skills contribute to delivering the required results:-

  • Human resources, learning & development and organisation development
  • Research and development of products and services
  • Materials, manufacturing and production
  • IT systems and communications
  • Plant, vehicles and equipment
  • Storage, distribution, logistics
  • Facilities management and relocation
  • Finance, merger and acquisition
  • Business development, sales, marketing and PR
  • Customer service and customer relationship management
  • Health and safety
  • Legal and professional
  • Quality assurance

Project Management skills will add another string to your bow and help you climb the corporate ladder. By demonstrating these transferable skills, you are able to show employers that you have the potential to excel in a management and leadership position.

Thales Training & Consultancy offer a range of accredited project management training courses including MSP®, PRINCE2® training, APM, APMP and ITIL.
