An additional £5m is beng invested in training opportunities for Londoners ahead of the 2012 Olympics.

The government funding will be targeted on training sports coaches, construction workers and 200 extra apprenticeships in customer services and hospitality ahead.

Skills minister David Lammy said: “We must get more people into skilled jobs in construction, customer services and hospitality, media and communications – and help the coaches and athletes, too. This £5m package of measures will help reach out to Londoners and give them the skills they need to benefit from the Games.”

The Learning and Skills Council will also contribute £1m to a pre-volunteer programme to enable unemployed people to use the Olympics as a stepping stone to permanent jobs.
