ROI for environmental training

default-16x9

Hi. I'm re-writing the engaging people in you organisation chapter for the IEMA's Environmental Management Handbook. I'm struggling to find a few case studies which show how training intervention has brought business benefit. Lots of generic examples around and very little hard data as is found, for example, in health & safety. Any signposting wold be appreciated. Thanks, Mark

  1. it’s only a tiddler but……

Sorry I can’t signpost you to something meaty but….
    How about this:
In November last year (2008) I (I’m a “one man band with associates” type of business) installed an “eco-button” on my desktop computer
    This cost £12.99
In the past 11 months it has saved me £70.91 pence
    an ROI of 546%
It has also saved CO2 emissions of 138.598 Kg
It requires the brain of a stunned slug to install; so no extra cost there
It’s use simply requires you to press one large pulsing green button when you leave your desk, so no real “change management” cost there
    An ROI of 546%

If the organisation had 100 people like me the potential saving would be £5792 per annum assuming that we were too stupid to have asked for a bulk discount on the purchase.

I hope that (but doubt that) this helps

  2. ROI on training

    Hi Mark,

One of the challenges of finding ROI stories is that not everyone wants to spend time and money evaluating.

However, we’ve got some case studies on our website that you’re welcome to look at – one is from a Health and Safety trainer who’s getting much higher pass rates for his workshops, and the other is from a H&S trainer who demonstrated that her training had led to loss of accidents (and a consequent saving of all sorts of things) and she ended up with a pay rise too!

Or are you looking for examples that aren’t H&S?

One of my clients has reduced the time it takes for some of their staff to write reports after they attended a writing workshop.  I’m still collecting the data from them.

I’m sure there are lots more out there – and we all ought to be collecting them.

    Warm regards,
