Salary Benchmarking

I work for an established management development consultancy and have been given the opportunity by the directors of this business to set up a new skills training business unit. I am in the process of putting together my business plan for this venture and need to make proposals as to my salary! We are projecting an income of £250k for the first 12 months of operating and my role will be to manage this business, the delivery resources, budget etc. Is anyone in a similar role and would be kind enough to offer me some ideas as to the package I should propose? Many thanks if anyone is able to help.

  1. No right answer
There is no right answer to this, but I would put you on a base of £50k with a 5% bonus for reaching an income of £250k. Income gained beyond this should a higher return for you. I would say 7.5 to 10% of the income generated in commission capped at £300k (50k beyond your 1st target). You should get some guarantees now for year two – perhaps 5% commission on a higher target.
