Synchronous communications tool

default-16x9

I need a synchronous communications tool to run online training sessions. It must not require downloads and must offer:

1. chat
2. a whiteboard

an optional extra might be sound and video.

Does anyone know of such a tool that can be bought independently of a learning management system?

  1. Guide available in E-learningZone
There is a useful guide to some of the collaborative and conferencing tools available in our E-learningZone news section. If you are looking to experiment in this area it’s worth trying out one of the ‘pay as you go’ services rather than those that require you to take out a licence up front. It’s also worth noting that more of the vendors are coming up with services that require smaller and smaller downloads so try to get updates from them about new products. Good luck.

  2. Yes and it’s free!
You can get ‘microsoft netmeeting’ which has white-board features, chat (as specified) and it will also do low-bandwidth audio / videoconferencing using webcams together with file transfer – most distributions of IE or Outlook express carry it as an optional component. Get em off the CDs carried by computer magazines.
Being microsoft, it might even conform with a restrictive MIS strategy.

  3. Yes – Centra
Visit http://www.elearnity.com for details on our services around Centra.

Visit http://www.centra.com for general product info.

Please Note – the CentraOne version released in May is the thin client (approx 1.4mb).

There are options around for “collaboration rooms” and “training rooms” based on ASP service, through to fully functional corporate intranet live delivery implementations.

The above answer assumes discounted MS Net mtg and need a fully functional corprate system.
