Where career progression is concerned, certifications matter. Of course they do, but the game has changed.
Long time touted as a ticket to job security and career advancement, today’s certifications are adapting to the cloud – which has fundamentally changed the nature of IT.
The New IT Professional
It’s no longer about being an infrastructure expert or a code specialist. IT workers must adopt more versatile roles. The new IT professional needs to be collaborative, agile, innovative – and full of business savvy. Finesse and expertise are the order of the day, for managing rapid development cycles. Creativity is needed to innovate, adaptability to run and integrate ever-evolving cloud-based components – and the continuous delivery cycle for applications.
Give weight to the certifications that matter
Certifications are valuable - they demonstrate your technical expertise to an employer or prospect. But they don’t tell the whole story. There are literally thousands of certifications, ranging from coding skills to hardware understanding to reselling. Today’s most popular certifications reflect the demand for cloud-based skills and business acumen. These include Microsoft’s Private Cloud certification, VMware’s virtualization certifications and the CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional), which covers cloud security. Cherry pick from those that include cloud and mobile-based operations, with business acumen so that you really understand the context of your work - and work will come your way!
