Training for L&D Officer

I have fallen into L&D by default having previously worked in a Change Management Role. I have gained practical experience with delivering IT course, writing proceedural training manuals and organising training events etc but I have no formal L&D training or qualifications so don't know if I'm doing it correct, I suspect if I am it's by luck. I've looked at the CIPD website but I doubt I would get my company to pay £8k Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should go from here?

  1. Training Qualifications
If a formal qualification is how you would like to start, then the Certificate in Training Practice is a good start. It will confirm that you are doing it right and give you basic skills. Many colleges offer this qualification and it is recognised by employers. CIPD use to do this too, and it was credited towards further qualifications with them. Probably be more expensive though.

If you want to learn more informally, then you could do worse than tapping in to a forum like this.

  2. CTP
    Hi Sue,

Yes the CTP is a good place to start, if you ring the CIPD up they will be able to give you a list of colleges in your area that run it. The other option is e-learning, Malpas do this and I’m sure you will find others if you do a search in google.

I hope that helps and good luck!

  3. Qualification options
You might like to take a look at the following discussion and the links that are there too. Do shop around, but with care. Always check the credentials of the the people who will be running the programme, check that the programme includes proper skills practice (simulating what you actually do, not just 10 minute presentations on a conveyor belt), get recommendations or endorsements from a past student and if you go for a distance or e- learning option sample the material before signing up and checkout the level of support you can expect.
Incidentally, Malpas, mentioned below, was taken over and re-named a couple of years ago so may not come up on a search engine.
    Best of luck
