Training for training managers

default-16x9

One of the training managers at the company where I work is looking for training for his position. He doesn't need a train-the-trainer course, as he doesn't do any delivery, but he's interested in the management/admin side of the job, and also learning about the learing process. He's been a training manager within the engineering function of the company for a couple of years, but he now has a small team of instructors reporting to him, so I think he needs to finetune his skills a bit. Any suggestions? He's based in London/SE.

  1. Courses, self directed learning or a certificate?
    Three suggestions:

Courses. Have a look at the courses that the CIPD offer. http://www.cipd.co.uk/training Some topics such as Trainer as an Internal Consultant, Managing Learning and Development could be very relevant.

Self directed learning – read, read and read! Again, the CIPD website lists a number of training books which cover all aspects of training and development from the learning process through to needs analysis and evaluation,. But there are also a lot of good websites which hold a lot interesting training related material.

Qualification – obviously, they could go the whole hog and do a NVQ or certificate in T&D. This would cover delivery but a lot more a well and would put them in a good position to give advice and feedback to team members as well as ‘managing the training function’.

  2. Train the trainer
Looks like you need a ‘1’ off approach.
Try Charles Holme, MODAS on 01372 363738, an exp trainer and manager who has worked for the CIPD and is a very good, he is located in Surrey

  3. Rather than a course, try a mentor
Unless the manager has his heart set on doing a course, I’d suggest a mentor instead: it’s perfect for people in a new management position.

The trick is finding a mentor with the kind of experience he’ll want to tap into.

My money’s with training manager mentor, Jonathan Kettleborough: http://www.corollis.com/main.htm

    Hope that helps.

  4. Training Management
CIPD offer a great new qualification titled ‘Diploma in Training and Development’. It covers four CIPD specialist electives:
    – Learning and Development
    – Managing Organisation Learning and Knowledge
    – Managing the Training and Development Function
    – Management Development

This can be done through flexible learning and is agreat way of developing your training managment skills.
