Training Trauma, Training Triumph

default-16x9

In this new Friday column, we look at the week's stories that have made us either triumphant or traumatised. TrainingZone invites you to jump aboard the emotions rollercoaster and see for yourself.

Triumph:

  • For northerners - If it’s “grim up north”, our pay packets certainly aren’t feeling sad. Working in Yorkshire, Scotland or the North East is more financially lucrative than settling in the south as salaries go further. The research comes from management consultancy Hay Group, but it doesn’t calculate how much you have to spend on woolly scarves and hats to brave the bitter cold.
  • For romance – It seems the Beatles were right – all you need is love. Businesses should be delighted when employees find happiness in each other’s arms, according to new research from Thorpe Molloy Recruitment. Founding Director Karen Molloy explains: “As people settle down they tend to become more career focussed” and “happy, contented employees tend to be more productive”. Is this a call for training to don its wings of love and call itself Cupid?
  • For the state of our souls - Perhaps we can be saved after all, with a £3m boost to a Home Office programme to promote voluntary work. So get out there and help someone else – but not on our time!
  • Trauma:

  • For love – Long hours are sending couples to the divorce courts as a husband’s time-consuming work is now the fastest growing reason for women to request a divorce. According to Dutch professors Paul de Graaf and Matthijs Kalmijn, violence and adultery broke up post-war couples but now spending too little quality time is causing woe. Given that love apparently makes us happy workers, this is terrible news for training success. The only solution is to slash everyone’s working day immediately.
  • For daddies - The TUC reports that more men then ever before are asking employers for flexible hours, but they are more likely than female staff to have their requests denied. Here at TrainingZONE we say set those daddies free!
  • For honesty - Look out for swag bags as there are criminals in our midst, according to a new report. The cost of employee fraud has increased by 200% since 2003, say accountants BDO Stoy Hayward. That’s an awful lot of stolen biros.
