Weekly Design Challenge – Setting Expectations #1

default-16x9

Recently, I started setting myself weekly design challenges which comprise of designing and developing a 2.5 to 3-hour virtual training course that can be delivered on a platform such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams. My challenge for last week was to design a course titled, "Setting Expectations". This course is aimed at new frontline managers who have little experience. Below are details about the course. To develop the course I will create three resources which are:

  • a facilitator's guide which contains all the instructions to deliver the training session,
  • a facilitator's presentation which contains visual aids that complement the facilitation guide, and
  • a workbook that contains handouts and activities for the participants.

Below is an introduction to the course which appears in the start of the facilitation guide.

INTRODUCTION

Every employee must know what is expected of them at work and it’s the responsibility of the manager to clearly communicate to the team members what their performance expectations are. When employee expectations are not made clear early enough there is a lot that can go wrong. The aim of this training is to help managers avoid that. During this session, participants will explore what employee expectations are and how to set and communicate them effectively.

DELIVERY MODE

  • Virtual (VILT)

DURATION (ESTIMATED)

  • 2.5 to 3 hours

SUITABLE FOR…

… a short training session delivered to new managers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • describe what employee expectations are,
  • set clear employee expectations, and
  • communicate employee expectations effectively.

WORKBOOK

Yes (the participants must have the workbook before the activity starts)

PREPARATION

  • Make sure you read through all the resources, so you understand how they work together to deliver the session.

PREREQUISITES

Must be a new manager with little or no experience in the role.

The training session starts with an introduction to the whole session shown below.

INTRODUCE THE SESSION
Introduce the activity by sharing the learning objectives with them. Share the slide titled – LEARNING OBJECTIVES.

After sharing the slide, tell them that:

  • Every employee must know what is expected of them at work.
  • It’s the responsibility of the manager to clearly set and communicate each team members performance expectations to them.
  • When clear performance expectations are not set and communicated to each employee early enough things can go wrong.
  • In this session, we will discuss how to avoid that by exploring what employee expectations are, looking at how to set and communicate employee expectations.
  • Now let's answer our first question which is: - What are employee expectations?

In the next part of the session which I will publish in my next post, the participants will answer the question.
