default-16x9

6 things that I think are required of a great leader. What do you think?

1. Good Judgement

The ability to evaluate facts to com up with possible courses of action in order to make sound decisions. Sound judgment allows leaders to make suitable decisions in the direction and training employees.

2. Sense of Justice

Good Leaders give incentives and reprimand according to virtues and qualities of an employee and their or their teams performance. They have the ability to administer a system of rewards and punishments impartially and consistently. Displaying fairness and impartiality is critical in order to gain the trust and respect of employees. Fair and consistent expectations should be communicated to each team member. The leader who possesses this leadership trait, teaches and coaches the employee prior to holding the employee accountable for the task. The leader is fair in holding employees accountable for results. When a mistake is made by the leader, he/she is quick to correct the mistake and be accountable.

3. Decisiveness

Good Leaders have the ability to make decisions promptly and to announce them in a clear, assertive manner. Using his good judgment a good leaders will make a decision promptly. It is also a good trait to look be forward thinking enough to be able to see a potentially unfavorable situation developing, and being able immediately takes action to address the issue.

4. Initiative

A good leader has self belief and is used to taking action without direction from others. Leaders should take ownership of issues he/she becomes aware of, they should assumes authority when none is present.

5. Tact

It is important for a leader to have the ability to deal with others without creating animosity. The quality of consistently treating peers, seniors, and subordinates with respect and courtesy is a sign of maturity. When dealing with mistakes it can be better to do so in private, equally it is good to praise employees in public.

6. Enthusiasm

Good Leaders display sincere interest and enthusiasm, they show interest in a task, and an optimism that it can be successfully complete

  1. And more….

There are probably a few things I would add to this list but I will keep it simple. Respect (for self and others) but the most important one for me is creativity. I think the leaders of the future are going to be those people who can do things differently. Not just follow the pack, the latest trend, whatever the consultants say, whatever the latest New York best seller self help book says, but those who lead by the strength of their own individual creative insight.

  2. Respect

Thanks for your comment – yes I agree with you, the best leaders (and certainly the most memorable) will stand out from the crowd. Respect is also crucial – something that will be gained by having good judgement.
