Workbooks for on-the-job training

default-16x9

We need to develop a series of on-the-job training workbooks for employees & volunteers working in our charity stores & enterprises. The on-the-job training will be done by the employee's manager, and the workbook will be used as further reinforcement, a bit of self-study and as an assessment tool. Have you developed workbooks you'd be willing to share? Any tips to maximise engagement & learning? Do you know of any suppliers for workbooks we can purchase?

Topics we need to develop for are:
Induction
Customer Service
Basic Food Hygiene
Equal Opportunities
Manual Handling
Appraisal
Personal Safety
Money Handling

Many thanks!
Lisa Jones

Just ‘copying’ someone elses is likley to cause you more problems, as I see it you have 2 options:
    1) ask experienced members of staff to write up procedures and then convert them into an in house resource
    2) contract with a freelance writer who is familiure with learning and tachnical processes

If you do go for the latter you could ask if the writers would be prepard to produce the material at a lower day rate than normal and that they have the rights to sell the resulting product – all be it in a generic format?

Talk to Oliver at http://www.knowledgewise.co.uk they have written material for me in the pase (and on a current project). They are very professional and cost effective.

Please let the forum know how your project progresses.

  2. workbooks
    Hi Lisa

My company, Supremacy Training Solutions author ready to deliver materials, though not much in the way you are looking for, only induction and customer service, rest really are soft skills. Some pointers I’d recommend for design is

Make sure that the author of the work books writes them universally (jargon free, plain english)

Try not to have massive blocks of text if possible, make it as simple and to the point.

Do have exercises. In my ready made range, I put in a “trainers guide” paragraph at different points in the module to guide the trainer through deliver or facilatation of exercise

Use illustrations, but only relevant ones and don’t over do it

My ready made package also includes powerpoint slides, which is worth thinking about if you wish to summarise the content of the workbook or “present it” to more than one

If I can help in any way, drop me a line at [email protected]

    Best Wishes

    Hi Lisa

I produce bespoke workbooks to accompany learning and development activities, sometimes as a pre-course workbook sometimes to accompany a learning session. I have a variety of books on diversity, bullying and harassment, performance management/appraisals and some not mentioned in your message.

email me if you want further info. about these.

    cheers

    Linda
