   I do sincerely hope there isn’t a book! It depends so much on what the job is, who the employer is, and what you have to offer. There surely can’t be an ideal formulaic solution.

   For general advice have a look at http://www.admin.qmw.ac.uk/careers/helpsheets/covlet.htm. To this I would add ‘keep it down to one page if remotely possible’ and ‘if in doubt, leave it out’.

   I’m sure there are many other similar websites: do a search.

   Also, get anyone you can to read it before you send it, especially people who know you well.
