A recent survey conducted by SurfControl have estimated that as much as £25m a year could be lost by businesses when their office workers are spending their time conducting personal activities rather than carrying out their job.
These findings were based on a thousand employees spending one hour of their time on the internet for personal activities. It was found that 59% of office internet use is not work-related, but by employees wanting to trade shares, purchase holidays or conducted their shopping online.
Pornography is still the biggest concern, however, only accounts for 2-4% of non-work based activity.
SurfControl formerly JSB Software Technology produce software that monitors the websites that employees visit and allows managers to restrict access. They have also recently acquired Cyber Patrol and CSM Security Management.
