We are thinking of introducing a competency based approach to developement. However I am struggling to find any basic information on competencies that isn't NVQ based. For example Why is it good to use them? How many should there be for each job role? etc.

You may find a couple of freebie resources interesting as background to the use of competencies. Look up http://www.abctrainingsolutions.biz – free trainer resources – management skills section. One resource is entitled ‘Performance Review Notes for Managers’ – I developed this document for the head office function of a retailer. ‘Performance Review: Recognising Behaviours Exercise’ can be used with delegates to get used to what is and isn’t behaviour.

Competencies were an intergral part of our job descriptions

before my company merged competencies were the main tool we used to discuss performance management. Each job role had a number of Threshold and Distinguishing Competencies these numbered maybe 4 for lower level jobs up to maybe 8 or 9 for more senior roles.
Competencies were grouped as self managing, thinking, influencing and achieving. A very useful book was produced which details what is meant by each of these and the competencies within each section.
Although the term “competencies” is no longer used in the company we still recruit against these.
