Assessment of Students

Anyone know of good reading materials regarding formative/summative assessment? Looking for something that is not overly-complicated in terms of background reading for people.

  1. Formative & Summative Evaluations
    Ann Marie McKenna,
You couldn’t do better than ‘Planning and Conducting Formative Evaluations’ by Martin Tessmer, published by Kogan Page in 1993. ISBN 07494 08014. I don’t know if it’s still in print, but you may be able to get it through your library. I highly recommend it.
Another you might try is ‘Programme Evaluation and Quality: a comprehensive guide to setting up an evaluation system’ by Judith Calder. Kogan Page, 1994

  2. Useful book
A book I found useful when I was doing my City & Guilds teaching certificate, which takes a very practical approach, is as follows. It devotes a chapter to assessment. It is for the practitioner, so isn’t a heavy theory read, but it does provide lots of scope for thinking about and applying these concepts.

“Teaching, Training and Learning: A Practical Guide” by Ian Reece and Stephen Walker. Published by Business Education Publishers Limited. My (well thumbed) copy is the third edition dated 1997, so it has probably been updated by now, but if it helps the ISBN is 0 907679 93 5.
