1. Training Request Forms
   I have something you could play with. It’s designed to ensure that prior to requesting training, objectives are clearly identified by the line manager/job holder, that authorisation for absence from the workplace is given, and that costs are tracked. It also serves to record an immediate post-training review – were the objectives met etc, and then to follow this up some weeks later to see if any learning has been transfered to the workplace.

   To meet your needs more you may wish to add stuff about where the training should be, maximum course length, budget allowed etc.

   It’s in MS Word 97 format. I don’t know where to send it!

2. Identify training needs, not interventions
   We revamped our forms so that the individual tells you about the need, rather than how it can be met – the training professionals may have lots of ideas for meeting a need apart from an instructor led course which is usually what the form will request.

   We also added the question “How will this training benefit you and the Company” – this gets the person and manager to consider how relevant it is to their aspirations and job.
