Generation Y ‘need management training’


Younger employees are likely to be in need of management training, according to new research.

A study from Talent Q reveals that people born after 1980 - Generation Y - can struggle with organisation in the workplace and need support from their employers to gain any career development.

However, the study found that staff from Generation Y have good social skills and a sharp attention to details.

Areas they have problems with include decision-making, leadership and time management.

Talent Q chairman Roger Holdsworth said: "The 20-somethings we studied were also less resilient, less confident at negotiation and decision-making, less influential in a leadership capacity and less able or willing to follow the rules – all of which is concerning for the future."

He added that "in stark contrast" to general perceptions the younger generations are "more in tune with other's behaviour than their elders".

The study of 4,000 people also found that Baby Boomers are adaptable and are open to new ideas.
