on-line assessment

default-16x9

I want to develop guidelines for writing good on-line assessmnt questions.

We want to improve the quality of the pre on-line assessment questions that we ask participants to take prior to completion of a web based training.

At the moment we ask simple yes/no questions but we need more more scenario type qyestions.

Any suggestions?

  1. Learning Points
    Lena,
I am assuming that the purpose of the pre-assessment is to enable training success evaluation?

Is the course being designed for a specific job role? if so then you should be asking questions based around the key skill / knowledge sets of that job profile.

If it is a generic development course then ask questions based around the key learning points of the course. A shorter and simpler version of the course validation is usually enough to give you a fair comparison when evaluating the success of the learning.

I would really need to know a bit more about the nature of the subject matter and objectives of the course to give any more detailed suggestions.

  2. nn-line assessments
    Hi there Lena
Online assessments generally need to be quite simple – e.g. true vs false. One way to increase complexity is to have multi choice questions that can have more than one correct answer – i.e. tick all of the following that are correct. Other methods are
    1. complete sentences by placing in 2-3 words in the right order
    2. match two lists by dragging and dropping.

You need to make sure that you have 50% more questions than you actually ask so that learners cannot “learn” the questions and answers. This would enable you to jumble the order questions are asked and include new ones each time the assessment is taken.

    Hope this helps.
