SMT – Job Swap?



I have been asked to look at how to develop the Senior Management Team with regard to their overall effectiveness. Each is considered an expert in their own field but often are unaware of the different areas of the business.

One suggestion is to institute a "job swap" programme whereby the various Heads of Department can swap role for a few months to help bring their strengths and develop their weaknesses.

My question is this:

Given that this has never happened before, how can I help to prepare the business for this so that when the time is right we can gain the most benefit and minimise risk?

e.g. Shadowing/Mentoring etc....

    Hi Anthony,

    We have done this with both our entire Leadership Team job-swapping amongst themselves, and also having the Leadership Team job-swap with other employees across all areas of the business – all co-ordinated by HR !

    We held separate meetings with all individuals concerned after each occasion to check effectiveness, and it has been a really valuable exercise.
