For the love or the money?

default-16x9

Recently I was asked the question of how I got into Learning & Development, my answer - I fell into it. The training team needed support in covering some sessions and it went from there.

The question got me thinking... how do people get into the Learning & Development?

I got hooked on the L&D world when I was in the Army, since I left I have tested other waters but stayed with the L&D world in one way shape or form.

I expect to be on this earth for a limited period so enjoying the work, and the work/life balance, is critical to me: this is not a rehearsal, it is my one shot at life, I want to enjoy it.

My bank manager will tell you that it sure isn’t for the money!  Especially at the moment!

I had been working for the UK Financial Ombudsman Service, but when I returned to my company in NZ, there was nothing available in the compliance team. The training position came up and that’s where I’ve been since 2002! I was always the one nominated as "training buddy" in previous roles, so I guess it was a natural progression.

I love the variety of my role and I am continually learning from each course that I facilitate. Getting positive feedback makes the hard work worthwhile.

I am finding training zone really useful, both for tips and empathy from other trainers 🙂

When I’m ready to move on from training & development, I’m sure that the skills I’ve gained will be of benefit in other areas of the business.
